Research About Chen Li’s "Gong Yang Yi Shu"

Chen Li was a famous scholar of classics in the middle and late Qing Dynasty.Inheriting the ambition of his teacher Ling Shu,he devoted all his life to compiling the seventy-six volumes of Gong Yang Yi Shu,which had an important influence on the study of Gongyang since the Qing Dynasty.The first chapter of this paper investigates Chen Li’s academic background,including:"Chen Li’s life and learning","Chen Li’s writings","Chen Li’s school attribution" three parts.Gong Yang Yi Shu is a summation of the study of Gongyang in the middle and late Qing Dynasty,and is also the most important work of Chen Li himself.The second chapter of this paper analyzes the four characteristics of Gong Yang Yi Shu,which are "based on the method of He Xiu,quote extensively","digest three biographies of the spring and autumn period,textual research on Confucian texts","good at textual exegesis",and "seeking the geographical evolution".Influenced by the new style of classical works in the Qing Dynasty,Chen Li’s Gong Yang Yi Shu has a strong mark of The Times.The third chapter of this paper analyzes Chen Li’s most unique way of studying:"interpreting Gongyang with rites".From "rejuvenation of ritual study in Qing Dynasty" and "LingShu study Gongyang with rites",this article analyzes the reasons why Chen Li study the scriptures with rites.And also analyzes the interpretation strategy of Chen Li’s ritual system from four parts of "restore the original appearance of the ritual system","textual research of Yin,Zhou","distinguish between ancient and modern rituals","Take Gong Yang and He Xiu as the purpose";The fourth chapter of this paper analyzes the relationship between Gong Yang Yi Shu and He Xiu’s and Xu Yan’s Gongyang Theory,mainly including Chen Li’s correction to He Xiu’s Notes and Xu Yanzhi’s Commentaries,in order to probe into Chen Li’s position and attitude in his interpretation of Gongyang.Since the end of Qing Dynasty,Chen Li and his Gong Yang Yi Shu have been evaluated by two sides.The fifth chapter of this paper reevaluates the influence of Chen Li and his Gong Yang Yi Shu and its position in academic history,which will provide some reference for us to correctly understand Chen Li and his work.
