Xu Shen was an significant scholar in eastern Han Dynasty. With excellence in both the study of Confucian classic in classical writing and in current calligraphy, Xu Shen regarded Jia Kui as his teacher and proofread books in Dong Guan. One of his most famous works is Shuo Wen Jie Zi ,which has been passed down from his times. The scholars and researchers mainly paid their attention to the Shuo Wen Jie Zi during the process of studying. Furthermore, they usually considered Xu Shen as a character scholar other than a Confucian classics scholar. As a matter of fact, Xu Shen was an important Confucian classics scholar, which was praised as a unique five Confucian classics scholar-Xu Shuzhong.The main works of Xu Shen are Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Different Explanations on the Five Confucian Classics. In Shuo Wen Jie Zi, Xu Shen explained the characters in each book in Liu Yi as well as collated and contrasted the different opinions and theories in Different Explanations on the Five Confucian Classics. It also made a character explanation foundation for the success of the study of Confucian classic in classical writing and promoted the exegesis of ancient texts in Confucian classics, as well as reserved a great many of Confucian classics materials.At last, the Confucian classics thoughts of Xu Shen has been gradually developing and changing. After comparing the Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Different Explanations on the Five Confucian Classics, we can understand the development track of Xu Shen's Confucian classics thoughts.In a word, by analyzing the Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Different Explanations on the Five Confucian Classics, this paper has described Xu Shen's Confucian classics achievements and thoughts. Different Explanations on the Five Confucian Classics began the integration of the study of Confucian classic in classical writing and in current calligraphy, while Shuo Wen Jie Zi embodied the Confucian classics thoughts of being practical and realistic as well as incorporating both the study of Confucian classic in classical writing and in current calligraphy.
