A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of "Entomopathogenic Fungi:New Insights Into Hoste-pathogen Interactions" With The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

Deepening of globalization has promoted frequent biotechnological exchange between China and the West.Under this circumstance,as a vital medium,EnglishChinese translation of biotechnological literature plays an important role in biotechnological information dissemination in China.Proposed by Vermeer(1978),the Skopos Theory argues that the most important factor in the translation process is the purpose of the overall translation act.According to this theory,translators should follow three principles in translation activities: the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.With the guidance of the Skopos Theory,the author of the report undertook the English-Chinese translation of “Entomopathogenic Fungi: New Insights into HostePathogen Interactions”,an academic paper on biotechnology entrusted by Jinan Diaolong Medical Translation Co.,Ltd.Specifically,this report is divided into six chapters.Chapter One introduces the background of the task,the significance of the task and the structure of the report.Chapter Two presents a brief description of the source text,including its author,its major ideas and its linguistic features.Chapter Three describes the translation process,which falls into pre-translation preparations,while-translation difficulties and posttranslation editings.Functioning as the theoretical underpinning,Chapter Four elaborates upon the major arguments of the Skopos Theory and discusses its applicability to the translation task.As the core of the report,Chapter Five synthesizes the translation strategies adopted in the fulfillment of the task with the guidance of the Skopos Theory.On the lexical level,the translation strategies mainly include amplification,zero translation,and word-class conversion;on the syntactic level,the translation strategies mainly include division,voice conversion and reversing;on the textual level,the translation strategies mainly include literal translation and rewriting.As the summary of the report,Chapter Six takes stock of the major translation strategies adopted in the fulfillment of the task and reflects on the author of the report’s personal pains and gains from the task.
