On Translation Of Chinese Culture-loaded Expressions Into English From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Language is the carrier of culture and full of cultural connotations.Culture-loaded expressions carry a great deal of cultural information of their countries and are the essence and important part of language and they play an important role in human language.The translation of culture-loaded expressions is the key and difficult point in the process of translation.Therefore,the translation of culture-loaded expressions has attracted great interest and researches through the world.This dissertation made the comparison study on Shifu,You'll Do Anything for a Laugh written by Mo Yan who is the winner of Nobel Prize in literature and its English version by Howard Goldblatt who is a famous sinologist and literary translator in the U.S..Based on Relevance Theory,the purpose of the dissertation is to probe into the translation strategies in process of culture-loaded expression translation.This dissertation classified the culture-loaded expressions into four types,that is linguistic culture-loaded expressions,material culture-loaded expressions,ecological culture-loaded expressions and social culture-loaded expressions.Through the contrastive analysis between Chinese culture-loaded expressions and their translation versions,this dissertation attempts to summarize the five types of translation strategies that Goldblatt adopted to the context,namely cultural transplantation,cultural annotation,cultural amplification,cultural substitution and cultural omission.From the perspective of Relevance Theory,this dissertation attempted to make a probe into Howard Goldblatt's translation features by a comparison study on the occurrence of culture-loaded expression between source language and target language.
