Abstract/Summary:
The concept "defamiliarization" was first proposed by Victor Shklovsky, the scholar of Russian formalism in 1917.Aesthetic subjects often ignore familiar objects.Defamiliarization aims at creatively cracking people’s habitual thoughts and inherent cognition and delivering a fresh aesthetic experience to them.Russian formalists view defamiliarization as the important approach to reflect literariness.Literariness is the essential feature of literary texts. When translating these literary texts, the translator must recreate the literariness and represent defamiliarization devices in source texts in order to make sure that target readers can share the same novel and unique aesthetic experience. The defamiliarization devices studied in this thesis stand for those literary creating techniques that are deliberately designed by the writers to bring readers freshness as well as enjoyment.Shakespeare, the great master of literature,is not only a genius of word combinations and sentence arrangements, but also an expert of rhetorical devices. His words are harmonious in rhyme, neat in form,thought-provoking in theme, which can always bring readers novel aesthetic feelings. The drama Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most famous love tragedy.A lot of defamiliarization devices are designed in this drama to depict all sorts of people.Liang Shiqiu’s Chinese translation of Romeo and Juliet is praised by scholars for its faithfulness. His translation strives to keep the version as close to the original as possible without skipping the defamiliarization devices.By applying the quantitative research method and the text analysis method, this thesis focuses on studying the representation of defamiliarization devices in Liang Shiqiu’s E-C translation of Romeo and Juliet, proving its possibility and necessity in the process of literary translation,so as to provide guidance for translators to better transmit literariness during the translation of literature. It is found that Liang Shiqiu successfully represented defamiliarization devices in the translation by adopting both foreignization translation strategy and domestication translation strategy.By analyzing the representation of defamiliarization devices in four different aspects, namely phonetic aspect, lexical aspect, syntactic aspect and textual aspect, this thesis found out that the significance lies in conveying the writer’s communicative intention, meeting the requirement of literary translation and fulfilling readers’ aesthetic expectations.Because of the limitation of translation ability, translator’s thought and the linguistic differences between Chinese and English, some defamiliarization devices fail to be represented. The thesis draws a conclusion that Liang Shiqiu applied compensation methods to handle the representation failure caused by the differences between English and Chinese languages and cultures.
