| Figure is a major difficulty in interpreting.Whether it is in C-E or E-C interpreting,omission and misinterpretation of figures is a common practice.Therefore,how to converse figures accurately and immediately plays a vital role in the performance of interpreters.With the Sixth Hunan Provincial Postgraduate Interpreting Contest as an example,the author,also as the contestant in this competition,analyzes the figure interpreting part,which is from the second round of C-E consecutive interpreting.First,the author summarizes its three characters:high generality,dense figures,four elements of information containing figures which includes the limited category,figures,measurement units and head words for the purpose of analysis;Second,the author illustrates features of figures interpreting and theory of Gile’s effort allocation model so as to generalize common factors influencing figure interpreting such as note-taking and predication of figures.Through comparing the performance of each contestant from the video recording,mistakes and causes of those mistakes will be analyzed specifically including figure misinterpretation,absence of numbers,errors of measurement units and coordinated elements.Finally,relevant strategies dealing with mistakes in figure interpreting will be proposed. |
