| The Economics of Welfare is an economic book that introduces the theoretical system of welfare economics to the learners in the field of economics. The book contains a large number of parentheses in various forms, and according to statistics, there are about 457 parentheses from chapter 1 to chapter 3 in Part I of the book, which serve to supplement, explain, illustrate and give examples. The presence of these parentheses causes difficulties for the translators. The research on definition, function and classification of parentheses are the main focus of most scholars at home and abroad.Although in recent years, many scholars have begun to pay attention to the comparative study between English and Chinese parentheses, the research on the C-E translation strategies of English parentheses is still not comprehensive. In view of this, this paper, combined with the translation practice of The Economics of Welfare, makes a comprehensive and detailed discussion on E-C translation of parenthesis in the source text.In this translation report, the author firstly reviews the pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation work of this translation practice project, and then makes an exhaustive review of all the parentheses from chapter 1 to chapter 3 in Part I of the source text, and selects typical cases for analysis and research. On the basis of previous studies, this report selects the definition and classification of parentheses suitable for the source text, and summarizes the translation strategies of English parentheses The author defines an parenthesis as a sentence fragment in the source text that is separated by commas or dashes, which serves as a supplementation, explanation or comment. The parentheses in the material can be broadly classified into two categories:conjunctive parenthesis, which indicates the function of the textual, and modal parenthesis, which indicates the interpersonal function. On this basis, the author analyses typical examples and summarises three E-C translation strategies of parenthesis:putting parentheses in the front, embedding and keeping the original sentence sequence, and discusses in detail what kinds of parentheses each strategy is applicable to.The author hopes that the translation study of the English parenthesis will provide some ideas and inspiration for later researchers. |
