| In translation, a translator needs to master certain translation theory and skills so as to handle various problems. This paper discusses culture-specific items in a translation practice project--Bch:Music in the Castle of Heaven. Both Chinese and Western scholars have proposed their own definitions, classifications, and strategies of culture-specific items. Western scholars Eugene Nida and Peter Newmark have put forward definitions and classifications of culture-specific item. Meanwhile, Javier Franco Aixela once put forward his own definition, classification, and dealing strategy.Chinese scholars, like Chen Hongwei and Xu Mingwu have discussed their classifications of culture-specific item. And Qiu Maoru and Wang Dongfeng have proposed translation strategies for culture-specific item. In this thesis, Nida’s classification and Aixela’s strategies are used by this author.Three of Nida’s classification have been chosen:ecological culture, social culture, and religious culture. This thesis then uses five strategies from Aixela’s--nturaliztion, deletion, intratextual gloss, orthographic adaptation, and extratextual gloss to discuss translation of culture-specific items. |
