The external publicity of universities is an important way to improve the "cultural soft power" of colleges and universities,which plays a positive role in promoting the reform and development of universities.However,few systematic studies have been conducted about the translation of news on domestic university websites,and there are many deficiencies in the translation of news terms on university websites.In view of this,the author of this thesis,with due consideration,selects the C-E translation of news terms on the websites of C9 universities as its research subject.This thesis studies the application of cognitive terminology in news translation of Chinese university websites.From the perspective of cognitive terminology,this thesis makes a systematic summary of the problems in the translation of news terms on Chinese university websites.Through the research,it is found that there are four main problems in the translation of news terms on Chinese university websites,namely,mistranslation,inconsistency,redundancy and fuzziness.Through the analysis,it is discovered that these problems are mainly caused by the differences in cognitive ability and term variation.Next,this thesis puts forward three translation strategies:standardization,re-conceptualization and re-categorization.Firstly,translators need to establish correct cognition and reveal the original meaning of terms.Meanwhile,it is necessary to establish a term database when dealing with large-scale translation projects;secondly,re-conceptualization is based on the translator’s personal experience and background knowledge;thirdly,translators need to pay attention to the similarities and differences of terms in order to achieve better re-categorization.From the perspective of cognitive terminology,when analyzing news terms,we should take into account not only the linguistic structure of terms,but also the cognitive structure of terms.As news terms are the "roadblocks" in translating news on domestic university websites,translators and researchers need to work together to deal with the problems in the news translation of Chinese university websites,so as to find out the problems in time,and obtain solutions to the problems through the theoretical guidance of cognitive terminology and promote the foreign publicity of Chinese universities.
