Research On Modern Consciousness Of Fashion Magazines In The Republic Of China

The Republic of China was in the transition period from a traditional society to a modern society,all kinds of things in the society were also in the transition of the old and the new.The fashion magazine represented by Linglong was the most sensitive explorer of new things,its "every move" had become the symbol of leading the trend,and with its unique posture,it presented the modern consciousness of the society at that time.Therefore,this paper takes Linglong magazine as the research object,after careful investigation and analysis of its text content,this paper interprets the modern consciousness hidden behind it,then we can explore the modern consciousness in the period of the Republic of China.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the modern consciousness of the Republic of China,investigates the origin of "fashion magazine" and "modern consciousness",and explains the typicality and representativeness of Linglong magazine,which is the case study object of this paper.From the second chapter,this paper will make a concrete analysis of the modern consciousness in Linglong.First of all,the second chapter of the paper analyzes the conditions of the emergence of modern consciousness in Linglong magazine.From the external objective conditions,Linglong magazine was published in Shanghai in the 1930 s,during this period,Shanghai already possessed the modern characteristics,and Linglong magazine,which was conceived here,was bound to carry the modern consciousness;From the internal subjective conditions,the founder of Linglong magazine was a group of scholars who had accepted modern ideas.Their forward-looking editorial ideas and ideas had injected modernity into Linglong magazine.The third chapter expounds the modern consciousness presented in Linglong magazine.After investigation,Linglong magazine presents three kinds of modern consciousness,namely,the consciousness of female subject,the consciousness of new social autonomy;Consciousness of equality refers to the consciousness of gender equality.It advocates that women actively seek equal social rights with men,which is reflected in Linglong magazine in fighting for equal employment rights,education rights and national suffrage;The consciousness of patriotism advocates that women can realize their social responsibilities and consciously shoulder the mission of starting the country,which is expressed in Linglong magazine as conveying war information and mobilizing women to fight against Japanese aggression.The consciousness of new knowledge enlightenment refers to the purpose of increasing intelligence and breaking away from ignorance by spreading new knowledge to people.Linglong magazine’s dissemination of new knowledge mainly includes Scientific common sense,legal knowledge,parenting knowledge and literature knowledge.Scientific common sense helps people break away from dogma and superstition and establish scientific values;Legal knowledge helps people wake up their legal consciousness and safeguard their rights and interests;Parenting knowledge helps people raise children scientifically and cultivate ideal children;Knowledge of literature helps people improve their humanistic quality and enrich their spiritual world.The consciousness of enjoyment is embodied in the state of life and the value of recreational enjoyment,including spiritual enjoyment and material enjoyment.The spiritual enjoyment in Linglong magazine is mainly reflected by entertainment news,leisure entertainment and tourism;The material enjoyment is mainly reflected by demonstrating the material life of stars to readers and displaying material consumer goods in advertisements.The fourth chapter of the paper discusses the media significance of Linglong magazine’s modern consciousness,which is the soul and foothold of this paper.From the perspective of media,the ultimate purpose of studying the modern consciousness of Linglong magazine is to see its feedback to the social reality,that is,the state of the Republic of China society reflected by Linglong magazine through the presentation of modern consciousness.Through exploring the modern consciousness presented by Linglong magazine,we can pry into two points: First,the modern consciousness of Linglong magazine reflects the awakening of the modern consciousness of the Republic of China.Second,Linglong magazine played a promoting role in the awakening of modern consciousness in the Republic of China.It can also be seen that Linglong magazine and the modern consciousness of the Republic of China are mutually related.At the same time,this chapter also reflects the limitations of Linglong’s modern consciousness,mainly including "overcorrection" and "contradiction and hesitation".Among them,"overcorrection" is mainly reflected in the nude picture display and "disgusting men" discourse;"Contradiction and hesitation" is mainly reflected in the conservative attitude towards some problems,and then fall into the self contradictory situation.All in all,Linglong magazine,as the representative of the fashion magazine of the Republic of China,retained the special marks of that era with words and pictures,which provided a window for us to explore the social situation of the Republic of China,and had high research value.
