No(?)l Carroll is a famous American aesthetician and art theorist,he has an important role in the Anglophone philosophers of art.He has a great influence in the fields of art definition,film theory and basic aesthetic concepts research.He has some research in mass art and visual culture and other fields.Since the 1980 s,"cultural studies" have flourished,and popular culture studies was flourishing.The issue of mass art has aroused widespread concern in western academic circles.Carroll has paid attention to the academic discussion,and formed a systematic view around the issue of mass art.Based on Carroll’s analysis of the concept of mass art,this paper sort out Carroll’s views on the definition of mass art,expounds Carroll’s theoretical framework for the basic characteristics of mass art,shows the specific steps of identifying mass art as art by the historical narrative method for identifying artwork,and expounds Carroll’s theory on the relationship between mass art and emotion,morality and ideology It also evaluates Carroll’s mass art thought.Chapter one attempts to elaborate the definition of mass art.This paper briefly combs the views on the essential provisions of mass art in the academic history,so as to sort out the differences and connections between Carroll and traditional views,expounds the essence and path of Carroll’s definition of mass art,and shows the specific steps of the historical narrative method for identifying artwork in identifying mass art.Chapter two attempts to elaborate Carroll’s views on the basic characteristics of mass art.First of all,this paper expounds the multiple instance characteristics of mass art,and takes film as an example to determine the ontology of film,and then determines that the ontology of mass art is characterized by multiple instance.Then it expounds the technical characteristics of mass art.The concept of mass technology limits mass art.The technical characteristics are reflected in the mass art’s use of batch technology.Finally,the paper expounds the easy to understand characteristics of mass art,and expounds the form and content of the easy to understand characteristics.Chapter three attempts to elaborate Carroll’s view of mass art from three dimensions.Carroll expounds the relationship between mass art and emotion,morality and ideology respectively,and puts forward the viewpoints of emotional cognition,moral understanding and ideological rhetoric respectively,which determines the basic framework for the study of mass art from three dimensions.Chapter four evaluates attempts to Carroll’s mass art thought.Carroll’s contributions to the study of mass art mainly include: providing new ideas for the legitimacy defense of mass art,expanding the philosophical vision of the study of mass art,and enlightening the creation and criticism of mass art.Carroll’s research on mass art has the shortcoming that he does not pay attention to the danger of commodity fetishism of mass art and ignores the ideological problems of science and technology that mass art may.This dissertation attempts to show Carroll’s basic views on mass art as an art theorist of analytical philosophy by combing Carroll’s Thoughts on mass art.On the one hand,it attempts to provide an analytical philosophy perspective for the study of mass art,on the other hand,it attempts to provide a perspective of popular culture for the analysis of traditional art theory.In this paper,the understanding of Carroll’s thought on mass art is inevitably biased,but as an attempt to interpretation,I hope to play some useful value in the research of related issues. |
