Although Yuan Dynasty enjoys short reign, artists in Yuan Dynasty made great achievements. However, art historians of later generation generally emphasized the achievements of Yuan Dynasty painting, but paid little attention to the efforts of calligraphers in Yuan Dynasty, which is actually unfair. In this period, the revivalists, led by scholars such as Zhao Mengfu,Xian Yushu and Kuizhangge, inherited the tradition of "winning by rhyme" of Xi and his son,and succeeded the mantle of "upholding the law" in the Tang Dynasty.Under the reflection of individual talents, they glowed with classicism.Among them,as a key person in Kuizhangge,Ke Jiusi is one with unique style, profound attainments, unique insights and great influence. However, the title of his book is often concealed by the title of his paintings,so that for a long time, the history of books is not clear and the research is not enough. His unique style of writing has not attracted the attention of contemporary scholars and calligraphers. This is not only the deficiency of the study of calligraphy, but also the regret of calligraphy creation. On the basis of studying the testimonies of Jin and Tang Dynasties,Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy takes Ou Yangxun as the main object, and based on this, his unique style in brushwork, composition and ink aims to distance itself from the famous European scholars in history and create his own new look. There is no doubt that his efforts are successful. His brushwork is based on European characters, but he also refers to his own experience in drawing bamboo.Compared with Duan Jin’s European regular script, his brushwork is more graceful. On the composition,he referred to the practice of Leek Flower Post and so on,with independent words. In terms of ink painting,he learned from the method of Wen Fu Juan written by Lu Jianzhi, where it suddenly appeared thick ink characters, sometimes "broken",with different sizes. His calligraphy has formed a unique style, which is different from other calligraphers in Kuizhangge and opened up a successful road for future generations to learn from Europe, and also provided a successful reference for drawing lessons from the past.He was also responsible for identifying the famous paintings and calligraphy collected by the royal family, and what he saw was naturally more brilliant than that of ordinary famous painters. This is extremely favorable for improving one’s calligraphy and painting accomplishment and creative ability. To be fair,as far as the unique style and character of calligraphy creation are concerned,he succumbs to Zhao Mengfu and Xianyushu, and is higher than other famous people. His views on philology are more worthy of our careful taste. From this point of view, further strengthening the research on Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy creation and calligraphic studies is not only necessary for the study of book history, but also the inherent demand of contemporary calligraphy creation. This paper consists of three parts:The first chapter is the study of Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy. This chapter consists of two parts. The first part is Ke Jiusi’s era and his influence, mainly focusing on the background of Ke Jiusi,Yuan Wenzong’s appreciation, the relationship between teachers and students, and the influence of Kuizhangge on him.Look for the source of his calligraphy through friends. This part paves the way for the following, and then understands the formation of Ke Jiusi calligraphy. The second part is Ke Jiusi’s Calligraphy, mainly analyzing Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy artistic style and concept from Ke Jiusi’s handed down books and calligraphy inscriptions, and trying to fully grasp his works from the aspects of brushwork, composition, structure and pen use and highlight its unique characteristics. The second chapter is the study of Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy.Ke Jiusi is a connoisseur, painter and calligrapher. His collection activities and the influence of his paintings on calligraphy are the key research contents of this paper.Ke Jiusi was highly valued by Yuan Wenzong in Kuizhangge. He was the most important expert in the Yuan Dynasty.According to historical records,he had collected a large number of calligraphy works collected by the inner government, and his collection activities had a profound impact on the circulation of calligraphy at that time and later generations. In his paintings, from the perspectives of painting with booksand books with painting, this paper analyzes Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy and interprets his calligraphic thoughts.Ke Jiusi has his own unique views on calligraphy, and the perfect combination of the two ideas can be found everywhere in his works of art. Finally, this chapter makes a comprehensive analysis of Ke Jiusi as the representative figure of classical calligraphic thought. The last part expounds the influence of Ke Jiusi on calligraphy of later generation.Based on Ke Jiusi’s artistic achievements, this part discusses Ke Jiusi’s position and influence in calligraphy history.Throughout Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy, his greatest success lies in learning from the past and being able to stand on his own feet. However, due to the lack of historical materials of Ke Jiusi’s calligraphy and other reasons, the research on his calligraphy has been vacant for a long time. But with the vigorous development of China’s infrastructure, the unearthed cultural relics are increasing, and he will eventually get the attention of researchers in the history of calligraphy.
