Since 1948,American psychologist Frenkel Brunswik put forward the concept of tolerance of ambiguity,it has been concerned by many educators, especially in the field of second language acquisition.Listening is not only a difficult point in College English teaching, but also an indispensable part in English teaching. In the process of listening, learners often face all kinds of uncertainty and ambiguity. With the development of research, scholars have found that tolerance of ambiguity is closely related to second language learning, especially listening.Based on this, this study explores the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and the use of English listening strategies among non English majors, with a view to providing effective suggestions for improving the teaching effect of English listening.Based on the zone of proximal development and affective filter hypothesis, this study randomly selects 147 sophomores of non English majors from an independent college in Anhui Province.Through the questionnaire survey, descriptive analysis and Pearson correlation analysis using spss26.0,combined with the interview results, this paper explores the level of ambiguity tolerance,English listening strategy use and the correlation between them. This paper will focus on the following three questions:(1)What is the current level of ambiguity tolerance of non English Majors ?(2)What is the current situation of listening learning strategies used by non English Majors?(3)What is the correlation between the tolerance of ambiguity and the use of English listening strategies? The findings are as follows:(1)On the whole, the degree of tolerance of ambiguity of non English Majors is at a medium level, while most of them have a medium degree of tolerance of ambiguity in English learning.(2)The overall use of listening strategies of non English Majors is at the medium level.Among them, the mean frequency of meaning strategy use is the highest, while the mean frequency of form strategy use is the lowest.(3)There is a significant positive correlation between ambiguity tolerance and English Listening Strategies of non English Majors. There is also a significant positive correlation between the high and low tolerance of ambiguity groups in the use of listening strategies.Based on the above research results, this paper puts forward the following suggestions for College Listening Teaching: cultivating learners’ moderate tolerance of ambiguity and enhancing listening training. |
