| With the vigorous development of China’ economy and the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative,the international influence as well as the global status of China has been improving gradually and many other countries have turned their eyes to focus on China’s politics and diplomacy.Chinese Government Work Report is a kind of official document in the People’s Republic of China,being utilized to review and summarize the work fulfilled in the previous year and set the goals and deploy the tasks in the following year.In recent years,Chinese Government Work Reports have aroused much attention all over the world.How to make our translation of GWR become a discourse that foreigners can understand,accept and appreciate is a major issue that cannot be ignored in translation studies,which also benefits for the implementation of the “Going out” strategy of Chinese culture.A large number of expressions with Chinese characteristics can be found in GWR,which embody the unique features of Chinese culture.The quality of translation in expressions with Chinese characteristics will have great impact on the international community’s understanding of Chinese politics,economy,and culture.If the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristic is not accurate and doesn’t reveal the real picture of Chinese culture,it will not only be misunderstood by foreign readers,but will even cause speculation and over-interpretation by some foreign politicians and the media.In this way,negative influence will be exerted on China’s global image.Therefore,studying the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics enjoys not only challenges but also boasts important and practical significance.In recent years,more and more Chinese scholars and researchers have studied the translation strategies and methods of expressions with Chinese characteristics from all kinds of theoretical perspectives and contrasted the similarities and differences of translation strategies and methods between Chinese and foreign media.Since expressions with Chinese characteristics are the special linguistic phenomena in Chinese culture and these expressions describe China’s unique political institutions,economic concepts and cultural connotation,the author believes that it is of great value to study expressions with Chinese characteristics from the perspective of Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory.Therefore,the thesis have used the Chinese and English versions of Chinese Government Work Report from 2018-2020 as the studying materials and selected 34 typical expressions with Chinese characteristics to make a thorough and detailed analysis of the specific translation strategies and methods adopted from the perspective of Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory.Based on deep analysis,the author of thesis has summarized that there are five main features of expressions with Chinese characteristics,which are contemporary,recapitulative,political,cultural and popular.On the basis of the differences in language form or the expression content,the study divides the expressions with Chinese characteristics into three categories,namely,expressions concerning Chinese politics and institutions,idioms and allusions as well as abbreviations.Different sorts of expressions with Chinese characteristics should adopt various translation strategies and methods.First of all,expressions of Chinese characteristics related to institutions and policies represent the guiding thoughts of Chinese authorities in politics,economy and diplomacy,which belongs to unique Chinese social system.Therefore,foreignization translation strategy and literal translation method should be adopted in translating such expressions;idioms include Four-character idioms,slang words and allusions that inherit traditional merits of Chinese nation and wisdom of China.While translating such expressions,translators are supposed to adopt flexible and various translation strategies and methods.Once equivalent expressions to Chinese can not be found in English,the foreignization strategy and literal method should be adopted;on the contrary,domestication translation strategy and free translation method should be adopted after fully understanding the cultural connotation of the source text and the culture of the target text.Besides,plenty of abbreviations can be found in Chinese Government Work Report,which usually represent the fundamental policies and initiatives of China and play a significant role in outputting Chinese culture.While translating such expressions,domestication strategy and free translation method are usually adopted.All in all,due to the fact that the author’s ability is insufficient and the time of completing the paper is limited,there are still a few shortcomings needing to be improved.For instance,the quantity of the examples is still not enough and the subjectivity level is a little strong,which remains to be perfected.The author of the thesis hopes that the study serves as an implication and guideline for further studies on English translation for expressions with Chinese characteristics and contributes to the output of Chinese culture to the outside world. |
