A Report On Simulated Interpretation Practices Of The Press Conference Of WHO-China Joint Mission On Covid-19 At Geneva

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic in early 2020 has triggered heated discussions over the globe.Hence the World Health Organization(hereinafter referred to as the "WHO")has organized a pioneer team of international experts to come to China in order to investigate what has been done in China as to the control and prevention of the epidemic and find out how robust the Chinese preventing and controlling system is.After returned to the WHO headquarter in Geneva on February 25,2020,Dr.Bruce Aylward,the leader of the international expert team,gave a news conference about the findings in China,the interpreter selected the speech given by Dr.Bruce Aylward as the original material of this interpretation,and conducted a simulated consecutive interpretation of this speech.This report is completed on the basis of this interpretation practice.It reviews the entire process,and divides into five Chapters.The first chapter offers a description of the background information of this press conference and the features of this interpretation practice.The second chapter records the works that had been done prior to the interpretation,during the interpretation and after it is done.The third chapter,Case Analysis,uses the selected cases to discuss interpretation techniques including Statements Restructuring and Logical Reasoning and interpretation approaches includes Interpretation of the translation,Amplification and Reduction that have applied and prove effective,under the guidance of Interpretive Theory brought up by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer in 1960s,then sorts out some main problems such as intensive information omission and misinterpretation occurred while doing this simulated interpretation,tries to find out the reason behind the problems and make amends.The last chapter ends in a summary that provides self-reflection as well as suggestions for the interpreter and for other professional interpreters from two perspectives,interpreting competence and interpreting strategy:first,to become more competent,we must remember "less is more" in note-taking,try to accumulate our knowledge of English and Chinese and grasp every opportunity to practice interpreting.Second,in terms of interpreting strategy,we shouldn’t be afraid to change the original format and be confident in deleting redundant words and phrases.Hope this interpretation report can provide some references for the future interpretation practice of the writer as well as for other professional interpreters doing this line of interpretation.
