COVID-19 changed the way that the world communicates.As the world enters the post-COVID era,the changes are also influencing countries’ international publicity During the pandemic,the major source of information was the Internet and for young people,social media platforms are important channels for news updates.China should take this opportunity of international communication,where major media should play a crucial role.As one of the top media in China,People’s Daily needs to be on the frontline.This report is based on the materials translated,covering a wide range of topics including society,economy,culture,and technology.The difference of trans-editing for a social media is that it is constrained by the platform—a fifth player in translation activity,besides the translator,the author,readers,and the consigner.Through analysis of the translation,the translator summarizes the challenges and solutions in news trans-editing for social media.This report uses Professor Huang Zhonglian’s Adaptation Theory to analyze the translator’s work and editors’ revised version.Through analysis and comparison,the translator finds that the major challenges of social media news translation arise from information overload,cultural differences,jargons,rhetoric,and reading habits.Due to the limitation of the platforms,the translator cannot translate all the information in the source text.The translator has to select and edit the text to balance the demands of readers,authors,and People’s Daily.The translator concludes that condensation,addition,and rewriting are the solutions to the challengesIn this report,the translator reviews the challenges and solutions in social media news trans-editing and hopes that it will inspire studies in this area and provide guidance to practitioners in this field. |
