| Taking the perspective of Skopos theory,this report analyzes the English-Chinese translation of documentary information in the biography Eternity ’s Sunrise:The Imaginative World of William Blake,and offers corresponding strategies to solve the problems that have arisen in the translation.Documentary information is the major content of a biography.Chapters 1 and 2 in this book introduce the growth,career development and artistic creation,therefore touching on massive historical details,and artistic background and terms that require the translator to conduct further research,and avoid using literal translation that would hinder readers’ comprehension.This report focused on the difficulties in translating the documentary content of biography,and introduced three main strategies to solve the problems following the three principles of skopos theory,namely,the rule of skopos,rule of coherence and rule of fidelity,in order to enrich academic reference for biography translation and also the application of skopos theory in translation studies.By offering 16 representative cases,the translator analyzed the reason and effect to be achieved of employing the three strategies.The strategy verification and specification is used to clarify the detailed historical information and convey the accurate meanings in Chinese,therefore fulfilling the rule of skopos of rendering an accurate translation;supplement and completion helps to produce a logical and fluent translation that presents coherence within the target text;and only through referring to the original works can the translator successfully render the original writing style and allusive content,and stay faithful to the source text.This report aims to enrich the translation strategies of biography and the application of skopos theory in translation studies.Using only one book as the subject of matter,however,will be unlikely to cover all the difficulties that may occur in biography translation,and may result in limited applicability of the above strategies. |
