Abstract/Summary:
In the recent thirty years, the study of corpus-based translator’s style has developed rapidly and achieved fruitful results in the field of corpus translation at home and abroad. However, there are still some issues that need to be further explored in terms of the research methodology and research content, which might provide inspiration for the formation of a more complete research paradigm in this field.Based on the self-built English-Chinese parallel corpus, this thesis aims to compare and analyze the linguistic and non-linguistic features of two Chinese translators in two different translations through the combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods,so as to summarize the overall style and analyze the subjective and objective factors that affect the formation of their style. The parallel corpus in this study includes two English novels by Khaled Hosseini,an Afghan American, and two translations of each novel by Li Jihong and Li Jingyi from the mainland and Taiwan of China respectively. As to the research model and method,it compares two translations of the same source text on the one hand and those by the same translator on the other hand using the tools of corpus linguistics and statistics to conclude the style difference between Li Jihong and Li Jingyi. In the end,the formation of each translator’s style is further interpreted from the subjective and objective perspectives, mainly including the translation principle and purpose,as well as the publication order and the social background, etc. The comparative study reveals that each translator has his or her own consistent style in different translations, even though some features also see an inevitable change. On the whole, compared to Li Jingyi’s translations,Li Jihong’s versions involve less amount of information and show the translation strategy of domestication, making the language more fluent and readable for the target readers. In the aspect of nonlinguistic features, the culture-loaded words are translated in a liberal way;more sentences saw an internal adjustment of the information order;and there are also more slangs and sayings featured by Chinese traditional cultural color in his translations. As to Li Jingyi’s translations, however, there is a larger amount of information with a preference for the strategy of foreignization,so as to represent the foreign cultural color in the source text. However, not all features explored in the study remain consistent in two corpora. Those changes,to a large extent, are influenced by the publication date and translation duration of different translations. Therefore, the translator’s style is by no means an absolute concept, which is mainly influenced by the subjective factors relevant to the translator, but the change of other objective factors would cause the irregular change of certain features. The significance of this study lies in the research model, method as well as the content, providing ideas that could be used for reference for a more scientific and comprehensive corpus-based study of translator’s style. In addition, the translation study of literary works by ethnic minorities between translators from the mainland and Taiwan of China may provide some implications for the study across the Taiwan Straits and the socio-cultural study of the countries along the Belt and Road.
