| Due to the complexity of their cognitive tasks and working environment,interpreters often need to receive multi-modal information input.However,regarding both the interpreting research and daily training,only the input of single auditory modality has been focused on.As digital,multimedia and other technologies enjoy popularity,together with online Interpreting promoted by the Covid-19,the input of visual modality has gradually attracted the attention of interpretation researchers.Most of the relevant studies took Simultaneous interpreting as the object of study.Few researchers studied audio-visual modalities input in consecutive interpretation,especially in the Chinese to English consecutive interpreting.As such,the research is likely to complement such field of research.In this study,the differences on consecutive interpreting quality with auditory input and audio-visual input respectively are compared and analyzed.Four indicators of interpretation are used to evaluate the quality of interpretation under different modal environments:Fidelity,Delivery,Language Quality,and Speaking Rate.The experiment is divided into three stages: Stage A(pure auditory input),Stage B(auditory input plus part of text in a visual form),and Stage C(auditory input plus some corresponding images and a little text).This dissertation applies the Multi-Component Model of Working Memory to analyze the experimental data.The conclusion is: no matter with or without note-taking,there is no statistically significant difference in interpretation quality between auditory and audio-visual settings.However,when without note-taking,interpreters perform slightly better with audiovisual input than with unimodal or auditory input.When with note-taking,pure auditory input brings to slightly better interpreting quality than audio-visual input. |
