Western Landscape Writing In Wu Jianren’s Novels

Wu Jianren’s novels involve a large number of descriptions of Western landscape,from western architecture,foreign goods and implements to ideas and so on.They show the urban appearance of the late Qing Dynasty at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century,as well as the people’s living conditions and spiritual mentality.They are excellent models for studying the transformation process of the late Qing society from traditional to modern.At the same time,Wu Jianren’s western landscape writing always runs through his ideological tendency and social ideal.On the one hand,he strongly rejects the Western cultural system and advocates the return to the traditional Confucian ethical order.On the other hand,he highly praises the western industrial civilization and emphasizes "a powerful country in Science and technology",showing the contradictory mentality of a generation of intellectuals in the era of great turbulence and change.This paper takes Wu Jianren,one of the "four condemnation novelists" in the late Qing Dynasty,as the research object.Through the analysis of various western landscapes in his novels,this paper explores the significance of western modern civilization in promoting the transformation of social form in the late Qing Dynasty,and analyzes Wu Jianren’s own ideological tendency from this perspective,hoping to make a supplement to the research on Wu Jianren’s novels.The first chapter is the introduction.First of all,it briefly introduces Wu Jianren’s life experience and creation,and summarizes the current academic research on him.Secondly,the purpose and significance of this paper are summarized.Finally,the research ideas and methods of this paper are elaborated.The second chapter mainly discusses the western landscape outside the city in the late Qing Dynasty.By analyzing the new urban space and the wide popularity of "foreign goods" in Wu Jianren’s novels,it shows the evolution of urban life in the late Qing Dynasty.The third chapter mainly discusses the changes of people’s ideas in the impact ofWestern landscape.Under the impact of Western material civilization,the ideas of the people in the late Qing Dynasty also had a fierce shock.The traditional values such as family ethics,filial piety and fraternity gradually disintegrated,and the western modern discourse such as democracy,equality and freedom entered the vision of the people in the late Qing Dynasty.The fourth chapter discusses Wu Jianren’s ideological tendency and social ideal.From Wu Jianren’s writing of Western landscape,we can see that his attitude towards Western civilization is vague and ambiguous.He not only rejects the Western cultural value system,but also praises the western industrial civilization.In his writing of Western landscape,he places his ideal struggle to explore the way to save the nation from extinction in the new and old changing times.
