| “The End of Art” is one of the key topics of concern in contemporary academic circles, the topic started with the German philosopher Hegel, then Arthur Danto believed that the “End of Art” theory declared that art should no longer bear philosophical responsibility.German art historian Hans Belting first proposed the “end of art history” theory from the development of art history narrative mode.Belting compares artwork and art history to “Pictures” and “Frames”,with the changes in artistic creation, the traditional art history “Frame” can no longer match the original“Picture”,the narrative mode of art history has also changed. When the “Frame” limits the exploration of art creation and art history writing, the traditional art history comes to an end, which vividly called “Broken Frame”.But “the End of Art History” does not mean the end of art,the art history after the “Broken Frame” is seeking a new “Picture Frame” suitable for the “Picture” of contemporary art creation, and a narrative model of art history in line with the development of contemporary art.Sorting out the origins and current research status of Belting’s “the End of Art History” theory is helpful for thinking about how to write the future art history.Chapter one explains the evolution of art and the definition of art history by tradition.Artwork is the carrier of artistic concept, art history exists as a representation of art.To sort out the development process of traditional art history, from Vasari,to succession by Winkelmann and others, and finally to Hegel. Then thinking about the predicament and autonomy crisis faced by art history from the game between contemporary art and art history.Chapter two analyzes the construction of Belting’s “the End of Art History” theory from three dimensions.“Frame-breaking”——demolition of the art history frame,“Multi-directional”——the failure of linear narrative in art history,“Global”——the presentation of a new map of art history.Chapter three mainly reflects on Belting’s “the End of Art History” theory, and compare which with Arthur Danto’s “the End of Art” theory.Explore the difference and significance of them, highlight the limitations and enlightenment of Belting’s theory.Summarize and analyze the “End Theory” phenomenon, exploring Yves Mishaw’s end theory of “Art Utopia”.And,take popular culture as an example to analyze the factors that influence the final conclusion of art.Combining with the development of contemporary digital media and other technologies, which discusses the challenge and enlightenment of popular culture to art history.Chapter four considers the new mode of contemporary art history writing from the perspective of the innovation of internal and external historical methods of art history, the continuation of the two-way dimension of form and content. Then consider the construction of contemporary art and art history theory from the diversified art creation and art criticism, the reference of art history to cross-border theory and the insistence of its own independence. And looking forward to the new model of contemporary art history writing in the future. |
