On Translation Of Chinese Science Fiction From The Perspective Of Stylistic Analysis

In recent years,Chinese science fiction has won Hugo Awards successively,which has received extensive attention from Chinese and foreign readers.In order to further develop Chinese science fiction,the research on the English translation of science fiction has been initiated to guide its translation later.This thesis takes the 2016 Hugo Award for Best Novelette Chinese science fiction Folding Beijing and Ken Liu’s translated version as the research object in order to explore the linguistic features of the original text and how its translated version conveys the style of the original one.On account of the comprehension of the science fiction and its literature investigation,the author finds that in addition to creative conception and practical significance,language features of this Chinese science fiction are also outstanding and worthy of attention and research.Therefore,the author discusses the text and its translated version from the perspective of novel stylistic analysis,focusing on the language features and style of the original text,whether its translated version conveys the thematic meaning and aesthetic value of the original one,and translation methods applied which have referential value in the course.Based on the text analysis method conceived by Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short,which is mentioned in their book Style in Fiction,this research adopts the case analysis method from four general headings involving lexical features,grammatical features,figure of speech,cohesion and context to analyze and explore the linguistic features of Folding Beijing in combination with this specific text and its characters,psychological activities and character relationships.On the basis of this research,the author finds that the original text and its translated version deliver similar meaning and style in general,and the translator achieves the success with concise and fluent language.However,in terms of the regional characteristics and the underlying discourse in the original style,the translator makes a partial compromise and omission.In the use of translation strategies,the translator tends to use literal translation,supplemented by free translation.This study points out that novel stylistic analysis can allow translators to better analyze science fiction,improve the quality of translation,make more science fiction with Chinese characteristics spread abroad,and constantly improve the international status of Chinese science fiction.
