This translation project adopts the science fiction Goat Song which was commissioned by SFWT(Science Fiction World Translations)as the source text.The story has a total of12,794 English words.Goat Song is one of the most representative works of the American writer Paul Anderson.It was published in February 1972 and won the Nebula Award and Hugo Award in 1972 and1973.And Paul Anderson has won seven Hugo Awards,three Nebula Awards.Despite his international fame and numerous awards,he is rarely known by Chinese readers.To remedy this regret,the author accepted the translation project and chose the project as the research material in her translation practice report for in-depth study.In view of the age of the source text and the particularity of its genre,Goat Song involves many expressions that affect the understanding and transmission of meaning,including a description of the scenery,description of characters’ appearance and psychology,poetries,coinage,and scientific description,all of which bring obstacles to the translation.Under the guidance of the three translation criteria of science fiction put forward by professor Guo Jianzhong and combined with the language features,the translator analysed the translation difficulties of the source text,accurately reproduced the stylistic features of the source text,and basically solved the problems encountered in translation.Thus,the author will discuss how she represents the stylistic features of science fiction,Goat Song,by following the translation criteria of scientificity,literariness,and popularity,and how she adopts the translation methods of transliteration,idiomatic translation,word-for-word translation,and imitation,as well as the translation technique of addition,omission,and shift,so as to basically solve the difficult problems in translation,strive to present an ideal sci-fi of style translation,and provide a reference for the translation of other sci-fi stories on translation criteria,translation methods and techniques. |
