Alice Munro is known as a master of the contemporary Canadian short story.She won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2013.Munro is good at depicting ordinary women from a female perspective,and her short stories usually focus on the love and trivial family life of ordinary people.The Bear Came Over the Mountain is selected from the last short story of Hateship,Friendship,Courtship,Loveship,Marriage,and it mainly tells the love story of Grant and his wife Fiona,who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.They have a marriage crisis when they are young and choose to adhere to love in their declining years.This short story was adapted into the film,Away from Her,in 2006,which has won the 65^thAmerican Golden Globe Awards and has been nominated twice for the 80^thAcademy Awards in 2008.So this short story is of great research value.As one of the most influential philosophers in France since World War II,Deleuze’s theory of schizoanalysis is one of the important methods of literary criticism in postmodernism.This thesis mainly applies the three concepts to specifically analyzes the process of the three old people achieving the spiritual flight with the help of“becoming”,“body without organs”and“deterritorialization”.Besides,it finds that the rhizome way of thinking and behaving changes Grant from majoritarian to minoritarian.Fiona has a good reward for her virtuous deeds,and she achieves the spiritual flight with the help of deterritorialization and restores her memories.The reason why Marian suffered from double losses is that she pursuits to satisfy her spiritual needs,and she is the concerned object of Munro.This thesis aims to remind people that if they allow their desires to develop without self-control in the highly developed modern society,they will lose the limitation of the spiritual field,and cause a tragedy of life.Hence,people are advised to be self-love,self-respect and self-sustaining,care for their families,and cherish the current life.At the same time,it is earnestly hoped that this thesis can broaden our horizons of interpreting this short story and promote the further development of criticism of Munro’s works by schizoanalysis.
