Maurice Ravel(1875-1937)was an outstanding French composer,orchetist and pianist in the late 19 th and early 20 th century.He was one of the outstanding representatives of Impressionist music.Ravel lived at the turn of the century,and his works are usually divided into two periods--the early impressionism and the late "neoclassicism".In this paper,Ravel’s two famous orchestral works,Rapsodie Espagnole and Le Tombeau de Couperin,are selected for analysis and research.Rapsodie Espagnole is Ravel’s first work recognized by the author in a real sense,and also his large-scale orchestral work;Le Tombeau de Couperin was Revel’s last grand piano work and was later rearranged into a new orchestral suite.This paper can be divided into four parts.The first part is the biography of the composer and his creation.The second part discusses the creation background and detailed explanation of the two works.The third part is the analysis and comparison of the composition techniques between the two works,which are respectively carried out in four aspects: melody and rhythm,form and harmony,orchestration and timbre,composition techniques styles.The fourth part is the comparison of the two works and the exploration of the characters ‘thoughts and spirits.This paper analyzes the creative techniques and styles of Ravel’s two works,summarizes the changes of Ravel’s creative style,from the impressionist style to the traditional style gradually,and forms the neoclassical style.At the same time,it explores the characteristics and spiritual connotation of Ravel’s creative thought,so as to have a deeper understanding of this great composer.
