A Comparative Study Of The Construction Strategies Of Subject Consciousness In Toni Morrison’s And Maxine Hong Kingston’s Novels

Toni Morrison,a black woman writer who entered the literary world in the early1960 s and has been writing for decades,is undoubtedly a member of the minority literary writers group.As a Chinese female writer,Maxine Hong Kingston also writes novels for women and their ethnic groups.They strive for social status and words for themselves and their ethnic groups through conscious creative practice He has made his own contribution in terms of language right and subjectivity construction.Their cognition of their ethnic identity and female identity,as well as their ethnic history distorted by mainstream discourse,are displayed in their novels through their varied writing techniques.It is necessary to explore the similarity of their works.Through close reading and literature review,this paper intends to use feminist narratology,metafiction,spatial research and other theories to make a comparative study on the choice and application of the construction strategies of ethnic and national subjectivity,so as to decipher the deep mechanism of ethnic women’s writing and predict the new direction of ethnic women’s writing.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part analyzes the common background factors of their creation.These factors mainly include the social situation at that time,the development of linguistics,their own factors,such as gender identity and identity.The second part attempts to explore the similarities and differences in the strategies used by Toni Morrison and Maxine Hong Kingston in the construction of women’s subject consciousness.The similarities include the creation of extremely tragic female characters,the ingenious transformation of narrative perspective to construct female authority,and the design of ideal paradigm of their own feminism.The differences refer to the specific paradigms of their designs In contrast,Maxine Hong Kingston is a "androgynous" Woman Warrior.Toni Morrison tries to establish a "female space" on both subjective and objective levels in the text.The third part attempts to explore the similarities and differences in the strategies used by Toni Morrison and Maxine Hong Kingston in the construction of racial subject consciousness.The similarities are to excavate the covered ethnic history,reflect the equal dialogue between history and literature,and infiltrate ethnic culture into the content and form of creation.The difference is that the two people have different awareness of racial development.Toni Morrison advocates to base on black culture and return to black culture,while Maxine Hong Kingston believes that the ultimate way out for the development of Chinese Americans is to establish a community without distinction between ethnic groups and races.The fourth part tries to analyze the self-criticism and development of race and gender consciousness in their later novels,and tries to predict the new development direction of minority literature.
