Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan American writer with double identities.A Thousand Splendid Suns is another masterpiece that Hosseini presented followed by The Kite Runner. He has exerted considerable influence on contemporary world literature.A Thousand Splendid Suns provides people with an insight into Afghan women, which is also a profound and open topic. This novel, starting from the perspective of Afghan civilians, presents the miserable experience of two heroines, their depression,sorrow,self-redemption,faith and hope.It also presents far-reaching influence and permeation of politics, religion and war on Afghan people,as well as individual’s life and fate that could be hardly reversed faced with the strong tide of the times.Hosseini meticulously sketched the mental development history of women living in Afghanistan over the past three decades, reflecting female’s psychological characteristics and survival in this particular region ruled by certain politics and religion. To begin with, female subjectivity, together with its development,is elaborated based on A Thousand Splendid Suns, followed by concrete analysis of how women survive and how they are subject to the family environment dominated by patriarchal culture, and how they follow the existential philosophy of tolerance. In the following, the formation of female’s cultural gender and how culture is built with maternity as subject are detailed. Moreover,“Id,ego and super-ego” concept initiated by Freud is also drawn to analyze how women build self-consciousness,the influence of internal and external factors on women’s growth and how women self-regulate in order to build subject consciousness. In the novel,a woman that is both a female and a human being is united, reflecting the value pursuit that contains gender but goes beyond it.Current achievements of studies on A Thousand Splendid Suns are introduced in the first section of this thesis, followed by detailed analysis of the appearance, perfection and characteristics of subjects of female growth,by which the author attempts to reveal cultural changes of Afghanistan ruled by the particular politics andreligion and identify the main idea of this novel: women who live in depression and sorrow still harbor faith and hope, fight against fate and finally achieve spiritual enhancement and personality independence.Female’s subject consciousness and development is stressed in section three. In section four, the situation where women live in the influence and containment of paternity before marriage and the control and oppression of manus after marriage in the family environment dominated by patriarchal culture, for which women are run into survival predicament,is presented.Female’s biological sex and social sex are analyzed based on feminist theories, followed by how they build self-consciousness by shaking off the control and oppression of patriarchy. How women grow with faith and hope in the depressive and miserable environment and how they achieve self-redemption from trauma are presented in section six.To conclude this thesis, the author analyzes the important effect of female’s awakening and development of subject consciousness on individual growth.
