Abstract/Summary:
The material of this translation practice is excerpted from Xenia Tchoumi’s book Why You Should Empower Yourself. It is an inspirational book. The translator chooses the first chapter and the eighth chapter of this book as the translation practice text.In these two chapters, the original author explains the importance of self-empowerment for the readers according to her own experience and the stories of the people around her.The text is consistent with the characteristics of vocative text according to text type classification of Peter Newmark,a famous British translation theorist.Newmark proposes that the communicative translation method should be adopted while translating vocative text.Newmark emphasizes that communicative translation theory is reader-oriented and pays attention to the conveying of information and the response of readers. The use of long and complex sentences is one of the remarkable features of the excerpted text, and they are also the key objects of study in this translation practice report.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator hopes to provide practical methods for the translation of long and complex sentences. Finally, the translator adopts the translation methods of inversion, division, omission, amplification and conversion,so as to deal with the differences between English and Chinese in terms of expression and culture,so that the target language readers can have the same reading feeling as the source language readers. The main contents of this report are task description, translation progress and case analysis.Through this translation practice, the translator finds that communicative translation theory is of good guiding significance in translating inspirational text. She hopes this report can provide reference for the translation of long and complex sentences in English-Chinese translation and do help to the translation of inspirational books.
