Poetry of Song Dynasty is the crystallization and treasure of Chinese history and culture for thousands of years. It contains rich cultural connotations and occupies an important position in the history of literature with its unique charm.Song Lyrics is as graceful and beautiful as water, bringing the joy of natural scenery to the heart and embedding it in poetry, which is more delicate and subtle than Han Fu and Tang Poetry. The famous patriotic poet Xin Qiji,as the representative of free and powerful style,is notable in ci-poem writing. Therefore,he has held widespread attention of scholars both at home and abroad. In recent years, the English translation of Xin Qiji’s poems has been a hot topic in the research field. Many domestic and international translators have translated his poems into English. How to reproduce the beauty in original poems to the greatest extent?Different translators will show them in their versions. As a pioneer in poetry translation from Chinese into English and French,Professor Xu Yuanchong has made great achievements in the field of Chinese poetry translation. He put forward a series of translation aesthetic theories, that is,Three-Resemblance Theory,Three-Beauty Theory,Three-Transformation Theory,Three-Zhi(三之)Theory and so forth.Based on the Three-Beauty Theory as the theoretical framework and the poems of Xin Qiji as the research object, the thesis studies the feasibility and applicability of this theory in translating Xin’s Song Lyrics by Xu Yuanchong and other translators.Firstly, the thesis analyzes beauty in sense from the perspectives of images, allusions and rhetorical devices;secondly,it analyzes beauty in sound from the perspectives of rhythm and rhyme scheme;finally, the thesis compares the aesthetic reproduction of different translations at the level of beauty in form from the perspectives of verse pattern and line length as well as antithesis. In the concluding part, the author points out some possible limitations and deficiencies of this thesis and looks ahead to the prospects of the follow-up study of this research.Overall, the thesis compares the pros and cons of different translations through the method of comparative study and the detailed analysis in order to reappear the beauty from original poems. It demonstrates the outstanding value of Xu Yuanchong’s translation of Xin’s poems under the guidance of the Three-Beauty Theory. Therefore, the author hopes that this thesis can bring some inspiration to the study of the translation of Xin Qiji’s poems.
