A Report On Chinese Translation Of Psychology Of Science(Excerpts)

Psychology of Science(1966)is a psychological classic written by American social psychologist Abraham H.Maslow.It criticizes mechanistic and dehumanizing model of the conventional science,and systematically expounds on the humanistic psychology.The translation of this book was commissioned by Chongqing Yunbin Translation Co.,Ltd.to the supervisor of the authoress,and will be published by Yilin Press.The Chinese translation of the source text was completed by the authoress in cooperation with four teammates,and the authoress translated more than 21,000 Chinese characters.This report is based on the translation of Chapter two(Acquiring Knowledge of a Person as a Task for the Scientist),Chapter six(Experiential Knowledge and Spectator Knowledge)and Chapter seven(Abstracting and Theorizing).The extensive use of psychological terminology and abstract nouns and of complex-complicated sentences with subordinate structures and multiple modifiers causes great difficulties.With reference to general principles of academic translation and the requirements for translation quality proposed by the translation company,the authoress follows the principle of faithfulness as the theoretical guidance.The case study illustrates how to achieve faithfulness at lexical and syntactical levels in specific context with reference to various translation theories and the differences between English and Chinese.At the lexical level,the translation of terminology,pronoun and abstract noun is discussed.At the syntactic level,two translation techniques,such as addition and division,are expounded.This practice shows that the faithfulness is achieved through a flexible combination of various methods and techniques according to the context.This translation practice is an exploration of academic translation,which is expected to improve the translation abilities of the authoress and provide some reference to other academic translation practice.
