Study On The Translation Methods Of Culture-loaded Words In A Hero Born From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

As an important part of China’s excellent traditional culture,Jin Yong’s A Hero Born contains a large number of culture-loaded words with rich connotations.However,due to the differences between Eastern and Western cultures,it is difficult to find the corresponding expressions of culture-loaded words in the target language,and their translation has become the obstacle of globally popularizing martial arts novels.In February 2018,the English version of A Hero Born translated by the Swedish sinologist Anna Holmwood was first published in western countries and was well received by readers.This is closely related to her successful translation of the culture-loaded words in the book.Coupled with the sudden death of Jin Yong,a new round of "Jinyong hot" has been set up.The relevance theory in the field of cognition and pragmatics has strong explanatory power for translation because of its characteristics of context,and it has been successfully introduced into the field of translation by a famous scholar Gutt.According to Nida’s classification method of culture,the typical culture-load words appearing in the English version of A Hero Born are divided into five categories:material,ecological,religious,social and linguistic.Applying relevance theory,a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis is used to conduct a case study of the culture-loaded words in A Hero Born According to the evaluation criteria of the optimal relevance,this thesis analyzes the translation method of culture-load words in Anna’s English translation and points out the merits and defects in her translation.The study found that to effectively convey the original intention in the communicative context and to produce the optimal relevance in the cognitive context of the target reader,different translation methods should be used.For the target readers who cannot understand directly based on their cognitive abilities,culture-loaded words without corresponding expressions should reduce cognitive efforts,enhance contextual effects,and thus achieve optimal relevance.Thus,more free translation,transliteration and annotation should be used.To achieve the association of the linguistic layer without losing the cultural connotation,the transliteration method is often used in the material culture-load words.If the contextual effect can be obtained according to the context,the omission method can be used.This paper aims to provide a reference for the translation practice of culture-loaded words in the same type of martial arts novels by summarizing the common translation methods of Chinese culture-load words.
