| With the development of international cultural exchange and Chinese culture gradually stepping onto the world stage, the demand for English translation of texts of Chinese culture and history is increasing.Due to the differences between Chinese and Western cultures,culture-loaded words, which are important carriers of Chinese cultural messages, have become one of the most mentioned difficulties in the process of translation and play a significant role in publicizing Chinese culture. The study of translation strategies of Chinese culture-loaded words will reduce the barriers in Chinese and Western cultural exchanges, help English readers learn and understand Chinese culture, and help disseminating Chinese culture to the world.Based on the case study of the translation of An Illustrated Brief History in 50 Art Treasures, this thesis attempts to apply the Relevant Theory to analyze the translation methods of cultureloaded words, taking the optimal relevance between the author of the original text and the readers of the translated text as the criterion. In order to maximize the contextual effects of the translated text and minimize processing efforts of readers, translators need to fully understand the source language and its culture, and take the cognitive environment of targeted readers into consideration. And then translators choose the translation method that makes it easiest to achieve the optimal relevance under specific situations. One single translation method, such as liberal translation, transliteration, direct translation, amplification, annotation, and a combination of two or more translation methods can be adopted in the English translation of culture-loaded words. |
