Abstract/Summary:
Teaching belief is a key part of understanding how teachers carry on their teaching design.Existing research has shown that teachers’ teaching beliefs will directly affect their specific practical behaviors of the grammar class. In the process of English teaching in junior high school, grammar teaching is an important part of developing students’ application ability of English, and teachers have different views on their grammar teaching. With the increasing attention attached to the development of teachers’ profession and the new curriculum reform, the teaching beliefs of junior high school English teachers are constantly updating.Under the background that the new curriculum standards set a series of new requirements for English teaching, investigating the relationship and current status between grammar teaching beliefs of English teachers and their teaching behaviors is required, which is of great significance for teachers to understand and update their own teaching beliefs and behaviors and improve their teaching efficiency.A combination of quantitative and qualitative method is applied into this research, aiming to explore the current situation of grammar teaching beliefs and teaching behavior of junior high school English teachers, the relationship between them and the influencing factors. There are 57 English teachers of four junior high school from N city of J province who took part in this study. As for the participating teachers in quantitative analysis,57 questionnaires were issued to them to analyze the general picture of their grammar teaching beliefs and behaviors, and then to find out the correlation and differences between them by SPSS statistical method. In addition, the researcher selected a teacher from each school to participate in the survey as the interviewee and the classroom observation’s subject to have a further understanding of their grammar teaching beliefs and their practical teaching behaviors. The results of the study are as the following:(1)English teachers of junior high school currently are holding a positive and diverse attitude towards the grammar teaching beliefs under the background of the new curriculum reform. They not only support communicative language teaching, but also show agreement for traditional grammar teaching methods such as drilling.(2)English teachers of junior high school focus on improving students’ practical language application skills in grammar teaching, and they agree with the necessity and practicality of inductive and communicative grammar teaching embodied in their grammar teaching behaviors.(3)The grammar teaching beliefs and behaviors of junior high school English teachers are significantly consistent with each other as a whole, but there are also some inconsistencies between some teachers’ beliefs on the grammar teaching method and their practical application in class. There are many reasons for the inconsistencies: lack of in-depth teaching reflection under the concept of new curriculum reform, students’ actual situation, the requirement of enrolment rate, the pressure of exam-oriented education to pursue high scores and so on.Based on the results above, this study suggests that junior high school English teachers pay more attention to teaching beliefs and the factors which affect teaching beliefs, and think more deeply about the problems they encountered in practical teaching combining with the new curriculum reform concept and some good teaching experience shared by other teachers. Then it can diminish the inconsistency between the grammar teaching beliefs and behaviors so as to improve their grammar teaching efficiency and the interest of grammar lesson.
