There are billions of internet users in China.Inappropriate guidance of public opinion will have negative impact on stability of society,such incidents are occurring quite frequently.It is extremely important to guide public opinion correctly and effectively.In recent years,Martin and White(2005)also encouraged researchers to apply the appraisal theory in Chinese discourse.This thesis selects Sina Weibo as an objective,extracts 10 events which gathered massive public opinions from 14 authoritative media official accounts,and establishes a small corpus with a total of 5,572 Chinese words.The author manually tags corpus,summarizes and induces the allocation of appraisal resources.Quantitative and qualitative research method is adopted to analyze in terms of how various appraisal resources can be properly used to guide the public opinion with a constrain of 140 words in Weibo posts.The research shows there is a big deviation in frequency of various appraisal resources being used in corpus.This is actually in line with posters’ purpose and experience while posting Weibo.It also verifies that the appraisal theory is suitable for public opinion guidance research in Weibo.The research findings will help media workers to optimize their language expression strategies when posting Weibo with a purpose of guiding public opinion correctly and effectively.Frequency of adopting attitude resources shall be roughly the total of appearance of engagement resources and graduation resources.Judgment resources shall be compulsory and assisted by affect and appreciation resources.Contraction resource can be commonly used while expansion is used for very limited topic where communication space needs to be created.Force resources shall be used in higher frequency than focus resources which are only introduced to demonstrate some categories of non-gradable.Finally,it will be hopeful if this thesis can be a reference for further research in this field. |
