The development of the shipping of the Nanliu River originated from the pre-Qin period, and after the operation of the Qin and Han periods,it became an important sea passage in the Lingnan area.Since the Wei and Jin dynasties, with the gradual increase of Sino-foreign exchanges, economic and cultural exchanges taking the Nanliu River as a channel have continued to develop.During the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty, due to the implementation of the sea ban policy and the sedimentation of the Nanliu River,Nanliu’s external functions gradually weakened. This article intends to combine increasingly rich archaeological remains with documentary records to conduct archeological observations on issues such as the development of the Nanliu River, its socioeconomic development, and its relationship with the Maritime Silk Road.Taking shipping traffic as a clue, the socio-economic development of the Nanliu River was systematically restored, and issues such as economic and cultural exchanges between the Nanliu River and the Maritime Silk Road were discussed. This article is divided into six parts:The first part is the introduction, which mainly explains the reason and significance of this topic, and reviews the related researches on the Nanliu River Shipping and the Guangxi Maritime Silk Road. The second part summarizes the topography and geomorphology, meteorology and hydrology, main river channels, ecological environment and location conditions in the Nanliu River Basin. The third part analyze the development of shipping in the Nanliu River based onthe current archeological findings and documentation. From this part of the discussion,we can see that the shipping of the Nanliu River originated from the pre-Qin period. With the development of Lingnan by the rulers of the Qin dynasty and Han dynasty, the Nanliu River inland shipping network began to form, and the Maritime Silk Road started from Hepu.During the Wei dynasty,Jin dynasty,Tang dynasty and Song dynasty, the inland navigation and navigation technology of the Nanliu River have been further developed. The maritime Silk Road began to decline during the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty, and the Nanliu River gradually moved from river to sea to inland navigation. The fourth part discusses the development of pearling, water transportation and handicraft industry in the Nanliu River Basin through archeological discoveries and historical documentary records, and then analyzes the currency circulation, the prosperity of the commodity economy, and the urban development in the river basin. The fifth part discusses the opening of the Maritime Silk Road and the rise of the Hepu Port, cultural relics unearthed in the Nanliu River Basin, and the material exchanges in Southeast Asia in the Nanliu River Basin and the Maritime Silk Road trade route, and the correlation between the Nanliu River and the Maritime Silk Road. The sixth part summarizes the full text.
