Anaylysis Of Translator’s Subiectivity In The English Version Of Desert Rites From The Hermeneutic Perspective

Desert Rites is one of Xue Mo’s most notable works.The novel is a masterpiece of the contemporary vernacular literature in west China.It contains rich Chinese traditional cultural elements.The English version of Desert Rites is translated by the famous American sinologist Howard Goldblatt together with his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin.The thesis studies the translator’s subjectivity shown in the English translation of Desert Rites from the hermeneutic perspective.The thesis illustrates multiple examples from the translated version to analyze the role subjectivity plays in the translation process and whether the subjectivity helps or hinders the translation from achieving the goal of fidelity.The thesis also analyzes the various translation strategies used in different steps of translation and their impact on the translation.The thesis finds the English version of Desert Rites an overall success despite some minor mistakes caused by the translator’s unfamiliar with the regional culture of west China.The translation is an outstanding example of the hermeneutic approach and the translators’subjectivity plays a vital role in the making of this success.
