A Con-categorization Analysis Of “yǒu Yīzhǒng X Jiào Y” Construction Based On CB Model

The Chinese linguistic structure of“yǒu yīzhǒng X jiào Y”has been largely used to denote an entity which exists in reality.But,with the cognitive development of human being in categorizing both the outside and inner world and the new“generalized”construction meaning,it has been widely employed in news headline which directly brings people the news body.The studies conducted by predecessors are mainly from the aspect of rhetoric,semantic and pragmatic features.However,nearly all of them do not embark upon the study of the con-categorization process of its semantic changes,its semantic categories and philosophy of language origins.Under the framework of Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics（ECL for short）,a systematic analysis of the“new”syntactic meaning,“generalizative”semantic meaning,“dynamic”pragmatic meaning of“yǒu yīzhǒng X jiào Y”will be explored,and the data statistical analysis will be made by summarizing the previous deficiency research results and integrating Construction Coercion and Conceptual Blending Theory into the“CB Model”and incorporating linguistic knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge into it to analyze the con-categorization process of the novel construction,uncover its motivation and cognitive mechanism and its relation with the conventional referential meaning,which is based on the core principle of“Reality—Cognition—Language”in ECL.1176 linguistic strings have been extracted from the website of people.com and gmw.cn etc.,and they will be analyzed by adopting the qualitative and quantitative methods.The main findings of this paper are presented below:Firstly,under the CB theoretical model,this paper has found that all the lexical items enclosed in the X slot and Y slot have been conventionalized and nominalized into“nouns”during the con-categorization process,which is based on the speech community level.Secondly,there are three con-categorization processes within Construction₂.The major con-categorization process occurs within one types of semantic category,which is similar to Construction₁ but differs from it,it is a“cross-mapping”relation instead of in a hyponymy relation.Besides,the“positive”proportion（87%）gained from the type frequencies of the X slot takes the lead,such as“strength”,“love”etc.And the proportion of its“negative”type（13%）is lower than the previous one,like“corruption”,“sickness”etc.（see Table 4.1）.Six dominant semantic types of the novel construction are being sorted out,ranging from the types of“positive affectivity（20%）,state of minds（12%）,complementizers（30%）,characterizations（7%）,undesirable social phenomena（21%）”to the“anti-corruptions（10%）”group（see Table 4.5）.Thirdly,the motivation of the novel construction（Construction₂ for short）lies deeply in the fourth linguistic turn—postmodernism in Non-objectivist Philosophy.Construction₂ can be seen as the“deconstruction and reconstruction”result of the traditional referential meaning,which is no longer adopting the Objectivist approach in denoting the entities in the world but has embodied the mechanism of cognitive transformation from the original“objectivity”and“truth-value”attributes to the philosophical basis of“embodiment”and“humanism”.The highly independent structure of Construction₂ is also an incarnation of its transformation because only a few proper names are being inserted before the construction to anchor the theme of news to elucidate all the non-objective linguistic categories phenomena in social life.Fourthly,the pragmatic features of Construction₂ cover its wide applicability within news media and“generalizative”creativities,and it is highly context-bounded.The new construction also provides a new way for people to construe and reform the world.At last,an attempt to carry forward the con-categorization study and the postmodern linguistic turn for linguistic expressions is expected to interpret the seemingly simple linguistic phenomenon but has great academic value.
