The CBT+Model Analysis Of Three Kingdom Character Related Xiehouyu From The Perspective Of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics

With their simplicity and profound meaning,xiehouyu reflects the unique way of thinking of the Chinese people and have been favored by scholars at home and abroad for their rich cultural connotations and pragmatic effects.A historical review of their research findings reveals that they have been studied mainly from the descriptive stage to the interpretative stage.In the descriptive stage,scholars have mainly made comprehensive statements on the sources,definitions,classifications and rhetoric,but the research perspective is single and limited to the study of the xiehouyu itself.In the explanatory stage,although scholars have attempted to explain the causes of the formation of xiehouyu from different perspectives with cognitive mechanism,most of them lacked corpus support and a systematic theoretical framework,and ignored the experiential basis of the production of xiehouyu.In view of this,this paper collects an exhaustive corpus of 659 entries of the Three Kingdoms of Character xiehouyu and builds a small closed corpus to attempt to develop a CBT+(Conceptual Blending Theory+)model from the perspective of embodied cognitive linguistics.The CBT+ model was developed to explain the mechanism of embodied cognitive mechanism of xiehouyu at three levels: syntactic,semantic and pragmatic aspects,and the feasibility of the CBT+ model is supported by a qualitative and quantitative research methods integrated.Through research it was found that:(1)The first part of the xiehouyu is regarded as the basis of interactive experience of reality and the second part as the result of cognitive processing.(2)The CBT+ model based on ECL mends the CBT in the following two ways.Firstly,It is believed that the input space is not only mental,but also experiential.Secondly,through the analysis of the Three Kingdoms character related xiehouyu with CBT+ model based on ECL,it is found that the process of conceptual blending is a chain of multiple space blending,which is the result of the cognitive subject’s continuous embodied processing,there are three kinds of blending involved: one-embodied and one-cognitive type(259 entries in total,accounting for 39.30%),one-embodied and multi-cognitive type(314 entries in total,accounting for 47.65%),and multi-embodied and one-cognitive type(86 entries in total,accounting for 13.05%).(3)Based on the analysis of the CBT+ model,this paper finds that,syntactically,xiehouyu can be used as independent sentence,or act as components of a sentence,such as subjects,predicates,objects and complements.Semantically,the formation in the process of blending,a special dialogue of self-questioning and self-answering is formed,which is a unique syntax of xiehouyu,xiehouyus are characterized by experiential,profound of meaning and enlightenment.The pragmatical functions of xiehouyu are to avoid embarrassment,to reinforce emotions,to be polite and to save face.This study not only mends CBT,but also provides examples and data to support further research of embodied cognitive linguistics,offering new methods and perspectives for further research on xiehouyu.The study further explored the cultural connotations behind the xiehouyus of the Three Kingdoms characters,which will not only provide a reference for the teaching of xiehouyus to foreigners,but also contribute to the “Chinese culture nationalization”.
