Study On Translation Of Religious Memes In The Last Quarter Of The Moon From The Perspective Of Memes Of Translation

In the book The Last Quarter of the Moon,Chi Zijian depicts the centuries-old history of the Ewenki ethnic group.This is the first novel in China that describes the living conditions of the Ewenki people in the Northeast and the vicissitudes of the past 100 years.In October 2008,the novel won the seventh Mao Dun Literature Award.However,few people study this text from the pespective of translation.Memes of translation is Chesterman’s personal achievement looking at translation from a meme perspective.Since this theory was introduced into China in 2001,researchers have studied the daily matters of public signs,advertisements,and buzzwords with it,but few studies have been conducted with literary texts,especially ethnic minority texts.Based on the comparision between the Chinese version and the English one of this ethnic minority novel,and given Chesterman’s theory,this thesis focuses on the translation of religious memes in the novel,observing their translation strategies,analyzing them and digging into the underlying influencing factors: translation norms and translation values.The author finds out: first,Bruce Humes,the translator,adopts a variety of translation strategies by Chesterman such as transposition,unit shift,abstraction change and information change,to better convey the religious memes of the source text.Second,the theory,memes of translation,is feasible to analyze the religious memes translation of this ethnic minority novel.The translator’s endeavors to conform to translation norms and translation values can be traced through the analysis of translation strategies employed by the translator and in return this rationalizes the relationship among translation strategies,translation norms and translation values in the theory.Third,this theory is conducive to deepening the understanding of translation,especially the relationship between the source text and the target text.This study enriches the study of religious information translation inethnic minority novels and the research of this theory.
