Abstract/Summary:
Bad Call is written by the British scientific sociologists Harry Collins,Robert Evans and Christopher Higgins.Although it is a book mainly focusing on football,it also makes comparisons between football and baseball, cricket, track and field. The book is novel and interesting, and its theme is very practical and forward-looking.Therefore,the translator chooses this book(specifically the first three chapters)as the source text of the translation project. The source text mainly talks about the misjudgments in sports games and corresponding solutions to such problems. After reading through the source text, the translator finds that it is a typical explanatory text and it has the characteristics of conciseness, preciseness as well as great attraction.Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory focuses on the acceptability of the textual information to target readers, and it is very suitable to guide the translation of the source text.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, this study mainly uses such translation strategies as amplification, omission and conversion to translate the terminologies, long and complex sentences as well as the discourse in the source text. This report quotes a large number of supplementary information, which highlights the characteristics of the explanatory text, and embodies requires of accurate transmission of information in communicative translation.Through this translation practice and report writing, the translator hopes to provide some valuable suggestions for other translators engaged in sports text translation.
