A Report On The Translation Of History Of Roman Empire(Chapter 3)

This paper is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The selected text originates from the History of the Roman Empire written by Irish writer Thomas Keightley.The book details the course of history from Augustus to the fall of the Western Roman Empire,when Romulus Augustus,the last emperor,abdicated.The author chooses the third chapter of the book as the text of this practice.Word order,as an important means of grammar,has always been concerned by translation researchers.Due to the different ways of thinking between English and Chinese,there are also differences in word order between English and Chinese,that is,Chinese word order is more fixed,while English word order is more flexible.By comparing English and Chinese word order,the author analyzes the differences in word order in three aspects:chronological order,logical relation and time and place.Then,according to the differences in these three aspects,the author uses Professor Liu Miqing’s the Principle of Temporal Sequence(PTS),the Principle of Cause and Result Sequence(PCRS)and the Principle of Spatial Sequence(PSS)to adjust the word order,so as to make the translation natural and smooth.
