A Study Of Hollywood Jews’ Response To Anti-Semitism 1938-1947

Hollywood Jews were a special group that created the Hollywood Studio system and the Star system and almost controlled the voice of American film production.However,the success of their careers and the rise of their social status did not protect them from anti-Semitism.Since the Nazis came to power in the 1930s,they have faced more anti-Semitic attacks from Europe and America.Under the influence of various factors,Hollywood Jews made full use of their professional characteristics and took a series of measures to fight against anti-Semitism.On the basis of relevant research at home and abroad,this paper explores the background,transformation,measures and influence of the struggle between Hollywood Jews and Anti-Semitism from 1938 to 1947 by combing and integrating relevant data,news reports,film materials and other materials.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the text is divided into four parts.The first part of this paper reviews the background of the Anti-Semitic attacks on Hollywood Jews.In the late 19th and early 20th centuries,Jewish immigrants seized the opportunity to join the American film industry.They created Hollywood and gradually became accepted by mainstream American society.But until the early 1930s,the shadow of anti-Semitism was always with the Jews.In November 1938,the Kristallnacht massacre in Germany exposed European Jews to a huge survival crisis,at a time when anti-Semitism was sweeping the United States,so Hollywood Jews were inevitably suffered attacks from anti-Semitism.The second part of this paper explores why Hollywood Jews’ attitude towards anti-Semitism changed from avoidance to response.Most Jews in Hollywood face anti-Semitism with an evasive attitude,but this only has made anti-Semitic offensives increasingly stronger.The experience of the anti-Semitic events gave rise to the sense of resistance,the holocaust enhanced the Jewish identity,together with the improvement of the social status and the increasing sense of security of American Jews,the attitude of Hollywood Jews towards anti-Semitism finally shifted from avoidance to confrontation.The third part of this paper analyzes the measures and processes of Hollywood Jews to respond to anti-Semitism in various ways.The battle between Hollywood Jews and anti-Semitism has appeared both inside and outside the film industry.For example,Hollywood Jews competed against the anti-Semite isolationists at the “Nye Hearing”;exposed Nazi anti-Semitic atrocities to the public through the production of war-themed films;organized and participated in activities to counter anti-Semitism;and brought anti-Semitism in American society to the screen.The fourth part of this paper evaluates the influence of Hollywood Jews in their response to anti-Semitism from 1938 to 1947.In the ten years of fighting anti-Semitism,Hollywood Jews have strengthened their Jewish identity and social status,and they have also affected the attitude of the American public towards Jews,which is beneficial to the weakening of American anti-Semitism.In 1948,a new situation emerged in the confrontation between Hollywood Jews and anti-Semitism under the combined effect of multiple factors.
