More and more social science books have been introduced into China with the deepening of exchanges between China and other countries. This report is an E-C translation report of the guidebook of eating culture Just Eat It(excerpt). This book has a comprehensive review of the popular dieting culture in the world, explains why people have contradictory attitudes towards food, and proposes a new relationship between people and food based on intuitive eating. In view of the large number of coined words,culture-loaded words and rhetorical expressions from this book, the Context Theory is chosen to analyze the typical translation examples in the translation practice. This report mainly adopts the linguistic context and the cultural context in the Context Theory to analyze translation cases. After an introduction to the background information, the characteristics of the source text, the preparation before translation and the process of translation, the report makes a detailed analysis of the translation examples from at the lexical level, the syntactic level and the discourse level, and has a discussion on how to choose translation strategies and techniques based on the contexts. This study shows that the linguistic and cultural context of the source text needs to be analyzed in the translation at the level of vocabularies, sentences and discourses.Translation strategies and techniques such as free translation, ellipsis, amplification, repetition and restructuring of sentences can be used appropriately in translation.Specifically,in the translation of coined expressions and cultural words in the source text, the contextual and cultural meaning of expressions need to reproduced;in the translation of sentences, attention needs to be paid to how to reproduce the logical coherence and rhetorical function of the source sentence;in the translation of paragraph,it needs to consider how to reproduce the logical coherence and rhetoric effect of the source text.Generally speaking, the Context Theory can guide the translator to better grasp the writing intention, content and stylistic characteristics of the source text, and reproduce the linguistic and cultural context in the target text. |
