A Study On The Effectiveness Of English Writing Teaching Assisted By English Newspaper Reading In Junior Middle School

writing,as one of the four skills,reflects students? comprehensive language ability.It is also well-known that reading and writing,in reality,are closely related in the learning process and reading can achieve a better output on writing.English newspaper reading enjoys great advantages such as latest information,novelty in the language and richness in the resources.The author introduces English newspaper reading into English writing for junior middle school students and attempts to answer the following questions:1)What is the existing situation of applying English newspaper reading to writing in junior middle school? How can English newspaper reading be applied to English writing effectively?2)Can English newspaper reading improve English writing ability for junior middle school students?3)Under the influence of English newspaper reading,are there any differences among students at different writing levels in junior middle school? If yes,what are the differences?The study took 120 students from Class 5(controlled class)and Class 6(experimental class)and 31 English teachers from a junior middle school in Nanning,Guangxi as the research subjects.The students in the experimental class were divided into three levels according to the writing scores of pre-test.The study was carried out for three months and students in the experimental class were asked to complete note-taking portfolio in newspaper reading and writing tasks based on English newspaper reading by way of extracurricular reading.Data were collected through writing tests,questionnaires and interview.The results of the study are as follows: First,most teachers in junior middle school know the importance of English newspaper reading,and in practice they put less emphasis on the improvement in writing through English newspaper reading.Note-taking portfolio in newspaper reading and writing tasks based on English newspaper reading are feasible and effective to combine English newspaper reading with English writing by extracurricular reading.Second,students can enhance their writing ability by combining English newspaper with English writing.Third,students at different levels improve their writing ability and those at the middle level benefit most,followed by students at the low level before students at the high level.
