Explicitation Of Implicit Logical Connection In C-E Translation Of The Courage Of Migratory Birds

The Courage of Migratory Birds is a narrative novel.The author tells the story from the perspective of the third person,focusing on describing the plot,rendering the ambience and scenes of the story.The language description seems loose but closely focuses on the character and plot of the novel.The source text is implicit in logical connection because it contains a lot of ellipsis,and connectives are seldom used.Through the translation practice of The Courage of Migratory Birds and studying the differences of explicit and implicit logical connection between English and Chinese texts,the explicitation of implicit logical connection in the target text is realized and the inner meaning of the source text is conveyed,so that Chinese literature can be better understood and communicated abroad.Under the guidance of the theory of logical semantic relations,this thesis analyzes three implicit extended relations,including elaboration,extension and enhancement in the source text and completes the transformation from implicit logical connection to explicit logical connection,so as to make the target text clearer.Firstly,this thesis introduces the concept of logical connection and analyzes the differences between explicit logical connection and implicit logical connection in English and Chinese texts.Secondly,this thesis analyzes the implicit logical connections in the source text with examples according to three kinds of extended relations: elaboration,extension and enhancement.Thirdly,the translation principle of implicit logical connection in The Courage of Migratory Birds is proposed,which makes the target text achieve the translation effects of structural adaptation,semantic adaptation and contextual adaptation in the target language.Fourthly,it focuses on translation methods to fulfill the explicitation of three implicit logical connections in translation practice.In this part,the combination method and the linear translation method are used to fulfill the explicitation of the elaboration in the target text.Besides,the substitution method and the insertion method are applied to fulfill the explicitation of the extention in the target text.What’s more,word order adjustment method and splitting method are also used to fulfill the explicitation of the enhancement in the target text.It is finally concluded that compared to retain the implicit logical connection,explicitation of implicit logical connection in C-E Translation can makethe logic of the target text clearer and meaning more coherent,and the above translation methods proposed in this thesis are appropriate,which can effectively achieve the explicitation of the implicit logical connection,and can also provide useful guidance and reference for the author and other translators to better complete the C-E translation of narrative novels.
