E-C Translation Of Hedges In Care Work And Care Jobs For The Future Of Decent Work

The translation project was selected from a report published on the official website of the International Labor Organization;this text belongs to an academic social investigation report.The translator extracts the fourth chapter for translation and analysis.The language of academic report strives for simplicity,objectivity and accuracy;however,in fact,hedges are widely used in academic report.The main reason is that hedges conform to the needs of objective reality and have important pragmatic value.This paper focuses on the E-C translation of hedges.First of all,the definition,classification and literature review of hedges are briefly introduced.Then,the author introduces the pragmatic functions of hedges,that is,hedges can help writers with the expression of discourse objectively and precisely,it can reduce the author’s responsibility for the topic.Furthermore,the text explores the function and translation of hedges in social investigation report based on Grice’s cooperative principles,this paper apply four maxims that should be followed in the process of translation: quality maxim,quantity maxim,relevance maxim and manner maxim.Then,based on the analysis of linguistic fuzziness and translation relationship,this paper summarizes the translation techniques of hedges.Finally,this paper summarizes and refines the previous point of view and discusses the deficiency of this research and prospect the future of this research.In order to realize the pragmatic function of hedges in the translated text,it is necessary to adopt different translation techniques.This paper proposes four translation techniques,that is,equivalence,omission,amplification and variation.In general,the translator should try his best to find the appropriate equivalent words to achieve the effect of lexical equivalence.However,there are huge differences between English and Chinese,the translator should make some changes based on the pragmatic effect it can achieve.This paper makes a concrete explanation and analysis of hedges by means of examples.By discussing the translation of hedges in social investigation report,the translator hopes to provide some reference for the translation of hedges in other texts.
