Written by Max Stohn,an American writer,How to Understand Data and the Digital Transformation is a popular science text. The first six chapters are extracted by the translator for translation and analysis. The text introduced that in today’s big data era, various enterprise groups have brought great convenience for economic development by using digital support system.Based on the characteristics of the original writing and language expression, the translator chooses to use the Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren to guide the translation practice. In this thesis, nominalization structure is divided into three categories:simple nominalization structure, compound nominalization structure and nominalization structure derived from verbs.By analyzing and studying the nominal structure in the materials,we can explore the translation principles and translation strategies of nominal structures in English popular science. This thesis focuses on the adaptation of nominalization structure in popular science text. After an in-depth study of the source text, the translator selects some typical nominalization structure examples and analyzes them. This thesis first determines the definition of popular science text, explains the grammatical features of popular texts and classifies the nominal structures in the source texts. Then, from the perspective of adaptation theory, this thesis compares the source language with the target language, and clarifies four adaptations in the process of language selection, which are adaptation of contextual correlates, adaptation of language structures, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability. Finally, through the understanding of source text and the analysis of nominalization structure in popular science texts, the translator summarizes the adaptation principles of nominal structure in Chinese translating. On the basis of the following adaptation principles,it is necessary to adopt different translation methods according to different types of nominalization structures. At the begining, the translator uses the translation methods of syntactic linearity, semantic translation for simple nominalization structure.Next, for compound nominalization structure, the translator uses the translation methods of conversion and literal translation.Lastly, for the nominalization structure derived from verbs, the translator renders it as a subject-predicate structure, complete sentence and verb-object structure.Based on the case of C-E translation, this thesis discusses the description and interpretation of these basic principles on popularscience translation, thus shows that the perspective of linguistic adaptation has a strong explanatory power for the practice and phenomenon of popular science translation.
