Light illuminates an object to make it visible;Things produce shadows and go with the light.Light and shadow create a visual environment, and the painter must be unable to avoid this factor when depicting visible objects. The word shadow contains two elements, light and shadow, which complement and foil each other.Western classical painting is a kind of with strong style characteristic“reproducibility” as the main characteristics of the way of painting,in this way,the painter to need constantly to explore the change rule of the objective world form and color, and shape and color is around the light has a rich level of light and shade, color of the actual situation changes, such as the process is complex and diverse,so the painters on the study of light and shadow also has not stopped, and in constant progress and breakthrough. In this paper, through research the relationship between light and shadow as a breakthrough point, analysis the differences between natural and painting light and shadow, and then began to explore the role of light in the painting, and dig the western classical painting period Leonardo Da Vinci,Caravaggio,Vermeer,Rembrandt and Latour style of the five different light shadow master’s example in their use of light and shadow in the picture.During this period, through literature search, case analysis, creative practice, induction and integration, etc.,I studied and concluded that light and shadow under masters’ hands are not only different in shape, but also a portrayal of the artist’s spiritual world.Although light and shadow are originated from nature, they are not blindly depicted in the master’s works, but subjectively adjusted according to their own creative techniques and picture needs, and finally transcend nature and reach the spiritual level. Finally, put all the research results of light and shadow into practice, and reflect the specific application of light and shadow in painting in my own creation.
