William Somerset Maugham is one of the most charming writers in British literary history in the 20th century, impacted by childhood experience and social changes,Maugham travels for his whole life, during which he keeps writing and pursuing the meaning of life, while exploring a useful way to save modern people at the same time.Under his pen,a number of exotic works are associated with his utopian complex. On the one hand,he depicts the natural beauty of those foreign countries in reality and illustrates their unique cultural meanings;on the other hand,he constructs an ideal home for modern people with his imagination and feelings, triggering reflections by comparison and contrast. This paper aims to understand Maugham’s travel note Don Fernando from the perspective of utopian complex, firstly interpreting his utopian writing about Spain and how his Spanish image is formed by analyzing the context in detail, then discovering the natural landscape, cultural landscape and characters presented in the note to conduct an analysis on the connotations of Spanish image in author’s pen, hence drawing a conclusion about the significant role the image plays in Maugham’s cultural reflection and spiritual exploration,as well as its value on intercultural interactions.Maugham does not simply depict the Spanish landscape in Don Fernando, but he constructs Spain with his ideas. The profound significances of it cannot be ignored.
