Character And Image-Analyzing The Concept Expression Of Xu Bing’s Three Works

The development of painting art is gradually disengaging from text to painting.As a symbol system for recording and disseminating language,how words can slowly become an image and a medium for expressing ideas are studied.Through the reading and comprehension of Xu Bing’s writings,this paper tries to sort out the development of words from the text to image and to concept from the historical development of painting,so as to present the relationship between “word,” “image”and “concept,” and to interpret the uniqueness of the “word” medium in Xu Bing’s artistic creation under this relationship.When word symbols appear as a “medium” in contemporary artworks,they not only play the role of images,but also assume the task of conveying ideas.In contemporary art,the concept has always been understood as opposite to the image type of traditional easel painting.However,when some artists begin to engage in artistic creation with word symbols,the word symbols become conceptual images.The word is both the concept and the image,which are interdependent.With the word being an image,it is also conveying the artist’s concept.Taking the work of contemporary artist Xu Bing as an example,this paper explains how word symbols have gradually become an image and a medium for expressing ideas in art history,and the uniqueness of word artworks created by Xu Bing in such an art history background to analyze the relationship between words,images and concepts.
